Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins... yea or nay?

Well, it’s finally arrived.  The first trailer for Tim Burton’s remake of “Dark Shadows” is here, and it’s… a lot more funny than I expected.  Apparently, Johnny Depp and Tim Burton have decided to scrap the soap opera elements, and play up the crazy camp of the original series by emphasizing its 70’s roots and surrounding Depp’s Barnabas Collins with a cast of  unique, weird characters in a unique, weird setting.  Let’s all check it out, shall we?

The thing that has me excited about this movie isn’t the trailer, which is really funny, but the cast.  I mean, aside from Depp, you’ve got Chloe Moretz, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jonny Lee Miller, Helena Bonham Carter, Jackie Earle Haley, Christopher Lee, and Eva Green as the beautiful witch Angelique.  These are some top-notch performers, and I think that when you mix them with Burton’s unique visual style and Seth Grahame-Smith’s unusual comedy style, you may just have something great, even if it’s not the serious take on Dark Shadows some fans might want.
