Apparently yesterday was a pretty big day for football news. Not only did the Bountygate punishments come out, the NFL’s most popular player also switched teams. When Peyton Manning signed with the Denver Broncos, you knew Tim Tebow would have to go somewhere else to play his unusual trade. What nobody expected was that Tim Tebow would be traded to the New York Jets. That’s right, the nation’s biggest media market now has the nation’s most talked-about athlete taking snaps under center.
In case you forgot, last year Tebow’s Broncos beat the Jets with a last-second 95-yard touchdown drive in which Tebow scrambled, passed, and generally made the Jets look foolish. I have no doubt this icewater is what put Tebow on Jets coach Rex Ryan’s map, and that the whole point of bringing Tebow in is to light a fire under Jets quarterback Matt Sanchez. They want Tebow to push the Sanchise, and vice-versa.
“Mark Sanchez is, has been and will be our starting quarterback,” said Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum of their quarterback situation. “We obviously know that Tim has a magnetic following. We understand the popularity of the backup quarterback, and this one is more unique than others.”
That’s what Denver said last year. Next thing you know, Tim Tebow has pushed Kyle Orton out of the starter’s position and the Broncos make the playoffs and get a win over the vaunted Steelers. Taking on Tim Tebow is dangerous for your other quarterbacks, especially when they’re not exactly MVP-caliber.
