One of the best things about Twitter is the fact that it is an evolving medium. In fact, Twitter is changing every day, right before our eyes. Last year’s top 140 Twitter accounts to follow will never be the same as this year’s top 140 Twitter accounts to follow, and that’s part of the joy of microblogging. As more and more people become immersed into Twitter despite what’s going on around them, who tweets, what they tweet, and why they tweet will continually change. Here’s Time’s top 140 Twitter feeds for 2012; once again, I did not make the list, but I’m okay with that.
Who made last year’s list will be different from this year’s list, and that will be different from next year’s list. Twitter is evolving, and that is a fun thing to witness. People are using Twitter for different things now, and for different reasons. As Twitter figures out how to make money off of hashtags and promoted tweets, so will users.
The key to making a list like this more than once or twice is to be consistent in what you do and why you do it. That’s what separates the Twitter cream from the crop.
