Donald Trump’s Miss Universe pageant just seems to be a breeding ground for controversy. Usually, that’s because The Donald has said something crazy or offensive, but not always. For example, take Jenna Talackova, the Miss Universe Canada representative from Vancouver, British Columbia, who was recently disqualified. As it turns out, Miss Universe Canada was actually born a male and had gender reassignment surgery at age 19; thus, she was disqualified from the pageant. I guess you can’t be Miss Universe when you were born Mister.
Here’s what Miss Universe’s team said: “Jenna Talackova from Vancouver, British Columbia, will not compete in the 2012 Miss Universe Canada competition because she did not meet the requirements to compete despite having stated otherwise on her entry form. We do, however, respect her goals, determination and wish her the best.”
Do you think that’s actually a question on the paperwork for Miss Universe competitions? “Are you now or have you ever been a member of the opposite gender from womanhood?” Or do you think they’re making up a clause after it was discovered that Miss Universe Canada competed in the 2010 Miss International Queen transsexual/transgender pageant in Thailand and was caught on tape discussing in surgical detail her gender swap surgery? I’m not sure if it’s a credit to her surgeons or a knock on most pageant women that I would’ve never known she was a man and just assumed she’d had a lot of plastic surgery in pursuit of beauty.
