Celebrities do some weird things, especially when it comes to parenting. For example, there’s Alicia Silverstone and her son, 11-month-old Bear Blu. According to Silverstone herself, she and Bear have a weird eating ritual they do. Alicia Silverstone chews food, then spits it into her son’s mouth. If you’re grossed out by this, you’re not alone (and your disgust is once again helping you keep healthy). According to some health experts, the mouth-feeding isn’t as good an idea as it seems (and it seems like a horrible, bad idea).
“There are those who think that a mom chewing a baby’s food provides helpful enzymes from her mouth but it doesn’t seem like a hygienic practice. Various viruses and bacteria, but especially herpes virus, may be passed from mother to baby,” says M.D. Dr. Jennifer Landa, Chief Medical Officer of BodyLogicMD. “These microbes present a challenge that the infant’s immune system may not be ready for. So the practice is questionable for safety, and then, there’s a certain ick factor here that needs to be considered.”
Plus, it’s gross. Did I mention that? You’re basically just slobbering soggy food chunks and drool into the mouth of another person. I don’t care that you fed him with your breast milk, there’s a huge difference between something meant to feed a child and spit. Plus, now that this information is public knowledge, imagine just how much spitty food is going to be thrown at this kid in elementary school and beyond.
