When baby Selena had a fever that would not break, her mother took her to the Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center in Tampa Bay, Florida, where doctors treated her high fever and administered fluids via an IV. When it was time for Selena to go home, a nurse when to remove the IV and cut the tube from her arm when she apparently made a mistake with the scissors. A nurse mistakenly cut off a 3-month-old baby’s pinkie finger, and now the mother is suing the hospital.
“I realized it because there was blood everywhere. It was all over her shirt, it was on my shirt. It was on my face. I held her face close to my chest. She was red, she was screaming,” said Selena’s mother, Veronica Olguin. “It’s really hard that she was born so perfect and she just cut off her finger, now she only has nine fingers, that is really hard.”
While the hospital rushed the baby to a different hospital with hand specialists in an attempt to reattach the finger, doctors were unable to save the tiny digit. Now Selena Olguin has 9 fingers, and her mother has a sizable lawsuit case to take to court. Granted, it’s just a missing pinkie and won’t really affect the child in any way, but it’s also a hospital making a seriously careless mistake and thus, they deserve to be punished. You don’t just cut things off people by accident and expect to get away with it when you’re a trained medical professional.
