Without a doubt, there are three things you can say about the Stanford Cardinal men’s basketball team this season. They were the second-best team in the Pac-12. They were the 69th best team in the country. They are the postseason NIT champions. It’s small consolation for a disappointing seasons, but the Stanford Cardinal crushed the Minnesota Golden Gophers 75-51 at Madison Square Garden to win the 2012 NIT.
“This season was a little bit of a roller coaster ride for us. We started off so strong, battled some adversity in the middle and ended as strong as we ever could have imagined,” said Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins. “When we look back … I just think we have grown together. We have grown up.”
Stanford finished the regular season 26-11, but finished on a hot streak after winning 10 of 13 games. It wasn’t enough to get them into the NCAA Tournament, but it was a good run and it gave the team hope either for the big dance, or the secondary dance. This wasn’t even Stanford’s first appearance in the NIT this season! Stanford made it to the finals of the NIT Tip-Off preseason tournament, losing to Syracuse in… you guessed it, New York City’s Madison Square Garden.
