You know you have designed something classic when it remains, unchanged, for 48 years. The Porsche 911 is one such product. The classic rear-engine sports car from Porsche has been in existence since 1964, when it was conceived as the brainchild of Porsche designer Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the designer of the Porsche 911 and former head of the company, has passed away at age 76. Porsche also headed up his own design studio that produces a line of accessories. But still, his crowning achievement is that car.
“He established a design culture in our company that has shaped our sports car to this very day,” said Porsche AG CEO Matthias Muller. “His philosophy of good design is a legacy to us that we will honor for all time.”
No matter the technical achievements of the company, design will remain king for the Porsche. They look cool, and that’s why people will do anything to get one and do anything to save theirs when they do get it. With cars, looks matter more than just about anything else, and that’s not something that’s going to change any time soon. You have to give credit to Ferdinand Porsche; he nailed the design of the 911 perfectly.
