There’s distracted driving, and then there’s the unholy hat-trick of driving offenses racked up by 29-year-old Shawndeeia Bowen of Torrance, California. While on the 405 Freeway, other drivers noticed Ms. Bowen, but not for anything good. Not only was Shawndeeia Bowen texting while driving, she was also holding her baby on her lap. That’s right, she was multi-tasking like crazy while driving on the freeway.
“A citizen saw it and thought it was so dangerous that he called 911 on his cell phone and continued to follow her the whole way,” said Lt. Steve D’Anjou, spokesman for the police department. “To help soothe the 1-year-old, she decided to pull her up to the front seat and try to calm her down.” D’Anjou added, “I’ve never heard of anything like this before, and based on how dangerous it is, I hope we never hear about anything like this again.”
The official charges Ms. Bowen faces, according to the Torrance City Prosecutor’s Office: three counts of child endangerment, two counts of violating a court order, one count of driving without a license, and one count of driving on a suspended license. Driving with a baby is one thing, but driving without a license is something else entirely. (She was also hit with three infractions for not having a child restrained by a seatbelt and driving while using a cellular phone.)
I’m against texting and making calls while driving. That’s bad enough on its own. Combine that with balancing a screaming baby on your lap while negotiating freeway traffic in LA?
