This has been a banner year for the Baylor University basketball programs. The men’s team has made its second Elite Eight under coach Scott Drew, and the women’s team had a perfect 40-0 season with a national championship. However, this powerhouse status hasn’t been earned cleanly. The NCAA reports that Baylor has committed major violations with both its men’s and women’s basketball teams. The violations center around improper contact with recruits (via phone calls and texts), having AAU coaches lie about contact from Baylor, and other illegal activities. In the case of the women’s team, the allegations center around face-smashing center Brittney Griner.
“Baylor University has been involved in a three-year joint investigation with the N.C.A.A. enforcement staff,” said Baylor spokesman Nick Joos. “The university has not received the release outlining the final decision from the N.C.A.A. committee on infractions concerning the case.”
Baylor has already smacked its own wrists in an attempt to stay on the NCAA’s good side. Both men’s coach Scott Drew and women’s coach Karen Mulkey have been docked two scholarships and been given two-month phone recruiting bans. Neither Drew nor Mulkey are in any danger of losing their jobs, being forced out by the school, or otherwise significantly punished by their NCAA overlords.
