Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez is 40 years old. For the majority of his life, he has been a professional baseball player. Not in the minors and the majors, Ivan Rodriguez got called up by the Texas Rangers at age 19 and for the next 21 seasons, he played Major League Baseball in one of the most physically demanding positions on the entire diamond. More importantly, he played great both defensively and offensively. Well, that is coming to an end. Pudge Rodriguez has retired from baseball after 21 seasons. He signed a one-day contract to retire as a Texas Ranger.
Rodriguez played for the Rangers for a staggering 12+ seasons (1991-2002, 2009), then played for the Florida Marlins during their 2003 championship season, the Detroit Tigers (2004-08), the New York Yankees (2008), the Houston Astros (2009), and the Washington Nationals (2010-11, platooning with future kidnapping victim Wilson Ramos). Along the way he won the AL MVP award in 1999, was a 14-time All Star, won 13 Golden Gloves (a record for catchers), 7 Silver Sluggers, and even made the All-WBC team in 2009. His career batting average is .296, with 311 home runs and 1332 RBIs, which is really impressive at any position, let alone one as hard on the legs as catcher.
