Our long national pregnancy is finally over.

It seems like Jessica Simpson has been pregnant forever.  I mean, the jokes about her eternal pregnancy have been going around for months now, so surely she’s been gestating for a year or more, right?  As it turns out, she’s only been pregnant since late October and her daughter, 9 pound 13 ounce Maxwell Drew Johnson, is a healthy and normal baby girl (and not some kind of elephant baby gestating for 18 months).  This is the first child for Simpson and her ex-NFL fiance Eric Johnson.

“We are so grateful for all of the love, support and prayers we have received,” crowed Simpson in a statement on her website.  “This has been the greatest experience of our lives!!”

So why Maxwell Drew Johnson?  It’s a weird and slightly terrible name for a girl, and I think we all agree with that.  Here’s the rationale:  Maxwell is Eric Johnson’s middle name and Eric Johnson’s mother’s maiden name.  Drew is Jessica Simpson’s mother’s maiden name.  That makes it slightly cute, but a child with the name Maxwell Drew should probably still be male, no matter how adorable the mother thinks the name is.
