Remember back when the iPhone was an elite device for unhappy AT&T users only? That has certainly changed in a hurry. First the iPhone hit Verizon Wireless; after that, the iPhone went to Sprint. Now, you don’t even have to have a wireless carrier to have an iPhone anymore. Apple’s vaunted iPhone 4S is headed to prepaid wireless carrier Cricket and is rumored to be heading to Boost Mobile in September.
Sprint hasn’t commented about the rumors, but consider the fact that they’ve got an iPhone and they’ve got a prepaid wireless provider in Boost Mobile. They’re not going to let Cricket, the competition, get too far ahead of them after they worked so hard to get the iPhone for their carrier once Verizon got it. I have no doubt that I’ll soon be able to pony up $400 to buy an unsubsidized iPhone and stick it with whatever carrier I want soon enough.
The iPhone isn’t a hip device, and no amount of hand-wringing from Instagram hipsters will make it hip again. It’s a phone, just like all the other phones. Odds are, you know multiple people with iPhones, and most of them aren’t that cool. I see people playing on iPhones while waiting to ride the bus; this is just a next step in the iPhone’s devolution.
