Politics can be a messy business. Just ask Wisconsin governor Scott Walker, who has been in hot water since he somehow became the Republican governor of a mostly-Democratic state with a strong union presence. Walker has made enemies in his state’s elite, which explains why he’s been constantly the target of vicious protests and even a recall election. Stunningly, Scott Walker has survived his Wisconsin recall election, defeating Milwaukee mayor Tom Barrett by a staggering seven points.
“Tonight we tell Wisconsin, we tell our country, and we tell people all across the globe that voters really do want leaders who stand up and make the tough decisions,” said Walker. “The election is over, it’s time to move Wisconsin forward. Bringing our state together will take some time, no doubt about it.”
Scott Walker is the first US governor to survive a recall election. Outside special interest groups spent a staggering $63 million dollars during the recall election, shattering the record for most money spent in a Wisconsin election; the majority of that money–$45 million–was spent by republican special interest groups. Three Republican state representatives and the state’s Republican lieutenant governor also survived recall elections.
