It’s been entirely too long since the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored the hardest-working people in show business. I’m not talking about producers or actors or directors or writers or even special effects guys, I’m talking about the people who tame the tresses of the world’s favorite stars. That’s right, hair stylists will now be eligible for Oscars in honor of their achievements. Of course, the hair stylists aren’t getting an award all their own, they’re going to share an award. What was formerly the Oscar for makeup is now the Academy Award for Makeup and Hairstyling.
It’s just a shame Vidal Sassoon didn’t live to see this day, because this is a pretty good change to the category for makeup achievements that aren’t special effects makeup. I wonder, though: does this have to be real hair, or can this be digital hair? I mean, if anyone deserves an Oscar for hair, it’s the team that brought Merida’s hair to life in Brave, right? They had to invent a new technique to depict curly hair; surely that’s Oscar-worthy!
