On July 20, the brothers Upton both hit their 99th home run. While that’s pretty eerie, it’s not terribly uncommon for BJ and Justin. In fact, the Uptons have hit home runs on the same day 13 times during their career, but it’s not every day you hit a career milestone. On Friday night, Arizona Diamondback Justin Upton socked his 100th career home run at Citizens Bank Park in a game versus the Philadelphia Phillies. Less than an hour later, BJ Upton of the Tampa Bay Rays hit his 100th career home run at Tropicana Field in a game versus the Baltimore Orioles. Justin and BJ Upton hit their respective 100th career home runs on the same day at nearly the same time!
“I just texted him, actually. He said he got his before mine. It’s all good, man,” said BJ Upton, whose Diamondbacks beat the Phillies 4-2. “It’s good to do that on the same day.”
“If I got there one minute before even, I still got there first,” joked Justin Upton, whose Rays blanked the Orioles 2-0.
As good as the Uptons are playing, and successful as their baseball careers have been, both are trailing behind their fictional sister Kate Upton. She’s been the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition covergirl and too sexy for YouTube, which is pretty hard to top. Still, 100 career home runs is nothing to sneeze at; the Uptons are the sixth pair of brothers to top 100 career home runs, joining Joe and Vince DiMaggio, Roberto and Sandy Alomar, Aaron and Bret Boone, Clete and Ken Boyer, and Bob and Irish Meusel.
