It’s tough to replace a television legend, just ask Kelly Ripa. Kelly Ripa had big shoes to fill, albeit not literally, when she replaced Kathy Lee as the co-host on “Live! With Regis and Kathy Lee” way back in 2001. The transition ended up being a smooth one. Then, television legend Regis Philbin retired from the show and that left Ripa all by her lonesome as a series of guest hosts paraded in and out of the studio. Ripa tried out 59 potential replacement hosts, and it appears that one has made the cut. Former NFL player Michael Strahan is believed to have taken the permanent hosting gig alongside Kelly Ripa on “Live!”
At first blush, Michael Strahan seems like the least-likely replacement host. After all, he’s gigantic–at 6’5 and 275 pounds, he dwarfs the 5’3 Ripa–with a gap-toothed smile, boisterous laugh, and he’s black. Still, he’s fun, seems like a nice guy on television, and never seems intimidating despite his bulk. Instead, he looks friendly and even huggable, which translates well in the world of morning television. He also replaces Regis when it comes to sports knowledge, as the future NFL Hall of Famer and New York Giants defensive end has proven during his guest-hosting gigs to have a keen mind and a willingness to let Kelly run the show without overwhelming her.
Of course, the results aren’t official yet, but come September 4, expect Michael Strahan to be filling that chair every morning as he and Kelly chat about the issues and occasionally capture criminals.
