Lydia Ko is an unusual girl. Born in South Korea, she grew up in New Zealand and took to golf at a young age. At age 14, she won the New South Wales Open, making her the youngest ever until the slightly younger Brooke Henderson won a Canadian Women’s Tour event in Quebec. Nonplussed, Lydia Ko decided to keep on winning. Two weeks ago, at age 15, she won the US Women’s Amateur championship, and then moved on to the next level. Lydia Ko won the Women’s Canadian Open at the Vancouver Golf Club in Coquitlam, British Columbia, by three strokes. That makes 15-year-old Lydia Ko the youngest-ever LPGA Tour winner.
“I’ll still remain an amateur and then finish high school and then go to college. I mean this is a great win, but I don’t think this will affect me changing my roots to my career,” said Ko, who has mentioned Stanford as a possible college choice. “To break another record, or being in the history, it’s amazing, and it’s always awesome to be able to play with the pros. The last few holes, it got a bit nerve wracking, but Stacy Lewis, after my birdie on 15, she said, ‘You know you can do it’ It was really great to have another player that I look up to giving me that much support. So it was really awesome.”
Not only was Ko the youngest winner in LPGA tour history, she’s also one of only six amateurs to win an event. The last amateur to win on the LPGA was JoAnne Carner in the 1969 Burdine’s Invitational. Next month, Ko plans to play in the British Women’s Open, but until then she’s headed back to her native South Korea. Maybe one day she’ll be able to take to the grass at Augusta National for a Women’s Masters.
