Every day above the streets of Los Angeles, news helicopters from every local network take to the air to capture high-speed chases, police pursuits, and more mundane events like traffic jams. Most of the time, these helicopters simply cover the news, but one helicopter over the streets of Hollywood made the news. Fox affiliate KTLA’s news chopper was forced to make an emergency landing in a parking lot after an oil leak caused engine trouble and smoking.
Amusingly, KTLA’s newsworthy emergency landing was captured on video by their rival, CBS LA’s SKY2 news chopper. Both helicopters were covering an armed and dangerous gunman on the loose near Hollywood Boulevard. Fortunately for KTLA, no one was hurt; cameraman Jeff Laabs and pilot Tim Lynn were on board the craft at the time of the emergency landing. While all that drama was happening, the gunman and two others were arrested by the LAPD.
All credit to the pilot, as real emergencies can make landing difficult, whereas things like erotic dancing in the aisles are less emergency emergencies. There’s a reason pilots go crazy, and that omnipresent risk of death surely has something to do with it. Fortunately, there was a handy place to set down, though it is unknown when the helicopter will be back in the skies over LA.
