I’d love to have a paper bag, but if I spent $290 on it I’d have to beat myself up.
High fashion is a very weird thing to people like me. For every high fashion trend, there’s something that mixes the high and the low: The Friday the 13th hoodie from Marc Ecko and the Snuggie at Fashion Week, for example. Well, Jil Sander is taking this mixture of high fashion and low culture to a new extreme. The $290 Vasari sack looks very familiar to anyone who has ever toted a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, chips, and a soda to elementary school. That’s right, the hottest new man bag in fashion is a $290 paper sack.
Of course, it’s not just any paper sack. The Vasari is made of coated paper with stitched seams and metal vents. There’s also the Jil Sander logo, which is how people know you’re not just bringing a normal paper bag into work. The bag, which also comes in a black leather version that retails for $630, is among the final works of the house’s famous designer, Raf Simons, who has been with Sander since 2005.
“You have to get a collector’s piece,” said Mildred Fabian, regional director of the fashion house. “I think it’s more of a fashion statement.”
Apparently people are agreeing with the statement: Jil Sander’s SoHo boutique is sold out of the bags, and you can’t find either online.
