The more things change, the more they stay the same. The sixth season of Jersey Shore is coming to MTV, and with it an announcement that is both surprising and unsurprising. The sixth season of Jersey Shore will be the show’s last. Citing rising cost of production and cast contracts and declining ratings, MTV has decided to put its show about partying friends to bed before the show loses the last of its legs. After shattering MTV records with an 8.8 million viewer debut for its fourth season in Italy, the show’s Italian adventure quickly became uninteresting and ratings never really recovered
Turns out a show about a clean and sober Situation and new mom Snooki just isn’t as appealing as a show about drunk, ‘roided out guidos and the meatballs that love them. Still, the fact that MTV wrung six very successful seasons out of a show with a pretty mediocre premise (Hey, let’s follow around these guys as they drink and hook up!) is impressive, as is the fact the cast is now comprised of people who are probably millionaires.
As for the Shore crew, they won’t be going away any time soon even without the show to back them up. The spin-off series Snooki & J-Woww got picked up for a second season, even if The Pauly D Project looks as if it is gone after one appearance. I’m sure other future spin-offs are in the cards for the crew, as MTV won’t let a good thing go if they can simply reduce costs of said good thing.
