Cue the fanfare and get ready to go down to your local Apple store and get into line. Apple has a scheduled press event at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco, California, for September 12, 2012. Whenever Apple does this, that means there’s a new announcement upcoming. Given the leaked images of the iPhone 5 and the traditional loss of an iPhone prototype at a bar, that can only mean one thing. Apple is announcing the iPhone 5 on September 12, or so the rumors say.
“A new iPhone is in line with all of our expectations,” said ISI analyst Brian Marshall. “Frankly, the iPhone 4S is a bit long in the tooth from a technological standpoint. For example, most smartphones now have the larger 4-inch screens, so I’m sure we’ll see the new iPhone with that larger screen as well. They could sell 50 million or more that quarter if things go right.”
Selling 50 million phones in a single quarter is impressive, though it is soon to be the heart of the December holiday season and the iPhone is undoubtedly going to be a popular gift. Apple has a built-in fan base, so there will be a ton of immediate upgrades on that account alone, not counting all the older iPhone editions Apple will lock out from upgrades and force upgrades of some sort on. Here’s hoping some of the rumored upgrades prove to be true.
