Actress Kathy Bates, who won an Academy Award in 1991 for Misery, has been a cancer survivor since 2003 when she underwent treatment for ovarian cancer. Like anyone who can survive cancer, she’s a tough broad, and that comes across when you see her on screen (especially in roles like on About Schmidt.) Now, Bates is a double cancer survivor. The 64-year-old actress underwent a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer two months ago. Bates revealed the news, as people do these days, via Twitter.
“Sorry for the long silence. I was diagnosed with breast cancer two months ago and am recovering from a double mastectomy,” tweeted Bates, who added, “I don’t miss my breasts as much as I miss Harry’s Law.”
After undergoing the double mastectomy, Bates has been certified as cancer free by her doctors and is looking forward to getting back to work. After receiving an Emmy nomination for her starring turn on Harry’s Law, she also received one this year for a run of episodes on Two and a Half Men. Not many people can do their best work AND fight cancer in the same year, so full credit to Kathy Bates for being awesome.
