Zombie-centric television show The Walking Dead went from a hot comic property to one of the most popular shows on cable television thanks to the skill of the cast and crew and AMC’s fearless promotion. Coming in October, the show’s third season will begin, but is AMC already making plans for years down the road? AMC’s own website leaked information about a fourth season of The Walking Dead in a contest ad; AMC’s reps maintain it was a mistake, but do you really buy that?
Here’s AMC’s statement on the matter: “The Walking Dead has not been renewed for a fourth season. There was no inadvertent pick-up of the series. Season three premieres October 14th. Promotional sweepstakes give-aways which involve prospective future season visits or opportunities are common practice in television. The sweepstakes rules clearly state AMC may award a substitute prize if the future season opportunity is not available.”
Honestly, if they renewed the show for a fourth season the moment the third one debuts, I would not be surprised. I wouldn’t be surprised if they already had the cast locked down for a fifth season, either. If they were smart, they’d do it now before the show gets any bigger. It is already getting record ratings despite losing show creator and guiding light Frank Darabont in the early stages of the second season.
