To say that Calvin Johnson may be the best wide receiver in NFL history seems pretty sacrilegious After all, the great Jerry Rice played this position and he holds pretty much all the receiving records there could possibly be, he played at a high level forever, and he was one of the most fit receivers to ever lace up his cleats. However, the man known as Megatron has already usurped one of the 49er great’s records. Calvin Johnson has set the NFL single-season receiving record; Johnson is also on pace to be the first wide receiver in NFL history to catch for over 2000 yards in a single season. It’s amazing to think just how much better Calvin Johnson is than, say, Randy Moss.
“I’ve been an NFL fan my whole life, dating back to watching Johnny Unitas and Raymond Berry as a kid, and I’ve coached in this league for 19 years,” said Detroit coach Jim Schwartz. “I’ve seen a lot of Hall of Famers, but I’ve never seen a better player than Calvin Johnson. He just broke a record set by Jerry Rice, who is arguably the best player in this history of this league.”
In 1995, Jerry Rice caught for 1848 yards; after yesterday’s 11 catch, 225-yard performance, Johnson has 1892 yards on the season and he’s even got a game left in which to catch for 109 yards and become the first player to top 2000 yards. While Johnson got a lot of yards, he didn’t find the end zone. In the end, the Atlanta Falcons beat the Detroit Lions 31-18, but Johnson is proving that he’s worth being the richest wide receiver in NFL history.
