Bethesda Softworks/Zenimax has been producing video games for a very long time, recently celebrating the 20th anniversary of their groundbreaking Wolfenstein 3D first-person shooter. However, today the focus isn’t on the past, but on the future. The best-selling Elder Scrolls games have made Bethesda a mint, but the company is looking to expand its reach and get into the lucrative online market. The Elder Scrolls Online – The Alliance has opened its beta testing sign ups. Here’s a cinematic to get you all fired up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzRZ1PzEhTgWhile Elder Scrolls hasn’t issued a lot of details about the game, they’re promising a fast-paced combat system, intelligent enemies who will work together to stop you, and no server selection screen. Instead, Elder Scrolls Online is promising that the game will make sure to put you with your fellow friends and guild mates in whatever version of the game they happen to be in. That alone makes ESO a massive improvement over other games of that ilk.
“The goal of the system is to allow players to join with the people they want to play with,” said Elder Scrolls Online creative director Paul Sage. “By eliminating server selection, you are able to join your friends at any time. While they might be in another version of an area, you can still say, I want to play with this person or these people and you or they will be moved. We try to intelligently put you in the right version of an area with the people you are most likely to want to play with.”
Head over to ElderScrollsOnline.com to sign up for the beta invitation! I have to admit the cinematic looks cool, but it also seems like a risk. For every World of Warcraft that succeeds, there’s a Star Wars – The Old Republic that has to go free-to-play to survive.
