It was a normal day in a Kansas City, Missouri, shopping center when around 6 PM, a car struck a nearby gas main. Nobody knew about that accident until it was too late. The car hitting the gas line started a leak, the leak built up, and eventually, the leak led to an explosion. A Kansas City shopping center exploded in a block-sized gas fire, injuring 14 people. Several more are missing.
“I would always fear there are fatalities in a scene like this,” said Kansas City Fire Chief Paul Berardi. “This investigation is ongoing. We do have reports that there was an odor of gas earlier. But, again, this investigation needs to be concluded before we want to speculate on any of that.”
There is probably nothing scarier than a gas main explosion. It’s the kind of thing that can destroy entire neighborhoods, not just buildings. Even when it just blows up a building, that’s pretty horrible. It’s one of my nightmares, really; to just randomly get blown up, burned and broken by the shock? No thank you. Of all the possible ways to die, it’s way down on the list.
