Tiny Robert Morris University in Moon Township, Pennsylvania, doesn’t have a storied basketball history. In fact, the school has only one NIT win in their college’s history, but it’s a doozy. Last night in the opening round of the National Invitational Tournament, Robert Morris upset the top-seeded University of Kentucky 59-57. That’s Robert Morris’s first NIT win ever, and another disappointment for one of the most disappointing UK teams I’ve seen in a long time. So much for that number one seed.
Robert Morris was ready and waiting for the game, which was moved from UK’s Rupp Arena in Lexington to Robert Morris’s Sewall Center in Moon Township due to NCAA games at Rupp. A record crowd of 3444 crammed into the tiny gym, and the school celebrated the game by cancelling classes so fans could prepare as best they could for their shot at glory. When Kyle Wiltjer’s last-ditch three-point attempt clanged off the back of the rim, the record-setting crowd hit the courts in celebration, and it was well deserved. Robert Morris dominated UK during the game, with the Wildcats needing a last-minute comeback to get the game within striking distance; Robert Morris trailed for only 32 seconds total and opened the game with a 10-0 lead.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbYFGlPKb_II can’t even be mad at Robert Morris. They wanted it, and UK didn’t care enough to redeem their season with an NIT crown.
