College basketball is a strange place. Given the multiple amounts of games, especially during the NCAA Tournament, means there’s a lot of time to fill. Pregame shows, postgame wrap-ups, halftime shows… they all need talking heads. Hence, you get some guys who make bad jokes, such as during the pregame show for the Miami versus Marquette Sweet Sixteen game. CBS analyst Doug Gottlieb joked he was on the show to provide the white man’s perspective. As you can see from the video below, the joke was met with chuckles and groans and general awkwardness, as most racially-tinged jokes tend to be.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNpce1yc8hQNo stranger to bad jokes, Charles Barkley jumped to Gottlieb’s defense: “I know this has nothing to do with the game. I wanna say something about Doug Gottlieb. He made a joke earlier tonight. All those people on Twitter who are going crazy, which I would never ever do, listen me Kenny [Smith], Greg Anthony, and Greg Gumbel didn’t take that personally so all you people at home who’ve got no life who are talking bad about Doug Gottlieb get a life. It’s no big deal.”
People have to realize guys like Gottlieb and company have a lot of time to fill, so jokes are going to happen. I’m fairly sure Gottlieb isn’t racist; if anything, CBS is racist for having only one white guy on their college basketball team.
