For some kids, as sad as it is to consider, school lunch is the only food they get. For other kids, school lunches are easily tossed away, no matter how healthy they might be, in favor of vending machine sugar snacks. For some students at Coehlo Middle School, the school lunches were taken from them. Without enough money on their accounts to pay, 25 kids were forced to throw out school lunches in Attleboro, Massachusetts. The incident took place at Coehlo Middle School, where students without enough money on their accounts to pay and who had no pocket money had their lunches thrown in the trash by employees.
“Employees had taken it upon themselves to institute this change; it was not condoned or approved,” said spokeswoman Holly Von Seggern from Whitson’s Culinary Group, who runs the cafeteria. “We had absolutely no idea.”
Apparently, the school district has no plan in place for kids who don’t have the money needed for lunch. Typically, those students receive a cheese sandwich, some fruit and veggies, and milk, with parents getting notification about payment later. Whitson’s runs the cafeterias at 80 New England schools.
