Usually marathons are a place for fun. People run, either professionally for prize money, in costumes for charity, or just because they can. If there are any troublemakers, it’s usually an isolated case getting naked in the street. However, all that changed today. Two bombs went off just 50 and 100 yards from the finish line of the Boston marathon; two people (including an 8-year-old) are dead and over 100 people are injured, with at least 10 people believed to have lost limbs as a result of the explosions–the bombs were believed to have been loaded with ball bearings to create maximum injury and carnage.
Here’s some footage of the explosions as taken from the finish line.

The marathon takes place, it’s a state holiday, the Red Sox play a home game, and it’s just a big holiday. Sadly, the two explosions have put a dent into the festivities for this year, but it could have been much worse. At least two other devices were deactivated by the Boston Police Department without incident, though there was one controlled demolition near the initial blasts.
