Cincinnati Reds pitching star Homer Bailey is from La Grange, Texas. Since he’s from Texas and he’s a pitcher, his hero is former Major League Baseball star Nolan Ryan, who leads the league in career no hitters with seven. Bailey isn’t quite at that level yet, but he has matched Nolan Ryan in one impressive feat. Homer Bailey has thrown two no-hitters in a row. Seventeen starts ago, Bailey threw his first no-hitter. Now, he’s thrown another no-hitter. Bailey blanked the San Francisco Giants 3-0 at home to give him two no-hitters in 10 months and the first no-hitter of the 2013 MLB season.
“Obviously being from Texas and what a legend he is,” said Bailey, who wears No. 34 to honor Nolan Ryan. “To do it once is extra special. To do it twice — I don’t really have the words for it right now.”
There are only six pitchers who have ever thrown two no-hitters in a row: Addie Joss, Johnny Vander Meer, Allie Reynolds, Warren Spahn, Nolan Ryan, and now Bailey. It’s hard enough to throw a no-hitter once, but to throw two of baseball’s rarest games in a row and to have your name appear twice in a row on baseball’s illustrious no-hitter list is really impressive. He may not have the best fastball, but Homer Bailey is still really impressive.
