Taking over the lead on one of the world’s longest-running and most-beloved science fiction television shows can’t be easy, nor can being the person who recasts the role. However, Steven Moffat, producer of Doctor Who, seems to be doing a pretty good job picking actors to fill out the cast of the show he is responsible for. The last choice, Matt Smith, turned out to be a pretty good choice. However, Smith is on his way out, and he needs replacing. Peter Capaldi has been selected to take over as the lead in Doctor Who.
“It is so wonderful not to keep this secret any more,” said Capaldi, a 55-year-old from Glasgow, Scotland. “For a while I couldn’t even tell my daughter. Being asked to play the Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can’t wait to get started.”
Capaldi has a history with Doctor Who. Not only is he a life-long fan, having written a fan letter about the show when he was 15, he’s also been heavily involved with Doctor Who and spin-off Torchwood. He played the Roman Caecilius in the 2008 David Tennant episode “The Fires of Pompeii.” He later went on to play John Frobisher in the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood: Children Of Earth.
