Colin Jost will soon be a familiar face on SNL.
It’s one of the more powerful seats in television, and it’s smack-dab in the middle of a goofy comedy program. People who sit at Saturday Night Live‘s “Weekend Update” desk tend to go on to become stars. Chevy Chase, Dan Ackroyd, Dennis Miller, Jimmy Fallon, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, and now Seth Meyers, who will be leaving the show to take over for Jimmy Fallon when Jimmy Fallon goes to replace Jay Leno. Joining the lovely and talented Cecily Strong will be a fresh face making his debut March 1. Colin Jost will be replacing Seth Meyers behind the “Weekend Update” desk.
Jost may be new in front of the camera, but he’s not new to television; Jost has been writing for SNL since 2005 and has been the head writer since 2012. Jost is also the creator of the brilliant “Weekend Update” guest contributor Drunk Uncle, among other things. He’s also a stand-up comic and actor, and is a former president of the Harvard Lampoon, which means he’s got some serious comedy chops. (He’s also dating Rashida Jones, so much respect for that, too.) Given the success other head writers like Fey and Meyers had behind the “Update” desk, I’m sure Colin Jost will do just fine. If not, there’s always Cecily Strong to carry the load until he can get on his feet. She’s new to Weekend Update, but she’s proven herself to be a really solid performer.
