The State of the Union address is a great place for a little political theater. The President gets to grandstand, representatives and senators get to appear on television throughout the country, folks get to shake hands and get autographs, and everyone comes together for a night of pointless clapping and standing ovations. NY1 reporter Michael Scotto used the SOTU as a chance to catch up and ask questions of Representative Michael Grimm, a Republican representing Staten Island. Grimm is involved in a campaign finance scandal, and when Scotto brought up the issue, Rep. Grimm declined to talk and that was the end of it, at least until the reporter threw it back to the studio. Once Grimm thought the cameras were off, he struck. Representative Michael Grimm threatened reporter Michael Scotto and the incident was caught on tape.
Here’s the video in all its awkward glory.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbpxVO-mnYU“Let me be clear to you, you ever do that to me again I’ll throw you off this f*cking balcony,” said Grimm according to a transcript from NY1. When the reporter defended his questioning, Grimm added, “No, no, you’re not man enough, you’re not man enough. I’ll break you in half. Like a boy.”
For once, it’s a political scandal that doesn’t involve paying for sex, looking up prostitutes while on the job, or secretly impregnating lesbians. This time, it’s just good old fashioned physical violence. It’s kind of refreshing, isn’t it? Just money and violence only. Of course, when you want to keep your scandal quiet, getting violent and going viral isn’t the best way to do that, but these are the kinds of things you turn into learning experiences.
