One is best known as a billionaire social networking maven. The other is the bad guy from Die Hard With A Vengeance and the creepy-voiced uncle in The Lion King. Together, they’re actors Jesse Eisenberg and Jeremy Irons, and they’ve got a big career move coming up. Jesse Eisenberg and Jeremy Irons have been cast in the upcoming Batman/Superman movie. Jeremy Irons is getting the plum role of Alfred, Batfleck’s loyal butler. Jesse Eisenberg is getting the awesome role of Lex Luthor, super-genius and Superman’s most famous foe.
“Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions,” said director Zack Snyder. He added, “As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure. He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious facade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”
It sounds like Snyder and Warner Brothers have put a lot of thought into the casting of their film, but there has been a lot of blow-back about Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. Personally, I think it will be fine. Lex Luthor can’t win a fight against Supes without kryptonite and a power suit, so does it really matter that Jesse Eisenberg will play the super-genius billionaire business maven? As long as they don’t turn Lex into a Zuckerberg clone, we’ll be okay.
I have absolute faith that the actors won’t be a problem for this movie, even if everything else is.
