Multi-millionaire Tim Draper has a crazy dream. He’s a resident of California who made his fortune investing in Skype and Hotmail, which means that he’s a pretty forward thinker. In fact, he’s thinking so forward he’s wanting to fundamentally change the most populous state in the United States. California is home to 38 million people and 164,000 miles of Pacific coastal property, which means that it’s an economic powerhouse several times over. Hence Draper’s plan. Tim Draper wants to break California into 6 separate states.
The plan splits California into the following states with no particular attention paid to populations: Jefferson (Redding and Eureka); Silicon Valley (San Francisco and San Jose); North California (Sacramento); Central California (Fresno and bankrupt Stockton); West California (Los Angeles and Santa Barbara); and South California (San Diego). California would cease to exist and all state functions would be split among the 6 groups who would decide who gets what assets, leaving the United States to decide what to do with the 5 extra states that didn’t exist until some guy with a lot of money convinced folks to divide California.
Draper has until July 18 to get 807,615 signatures on his petition. He claims the benefit–namely having state governments capable of dealing with the problems of manageable chunks of California–outweighs the difficulty it might create. I’m not so sure about that, but you have to admire the guy for having a dream.
