It was one of the highest-profile transfers of power imaginable. For 25 years, Larry King held down the 9PM slot on CNN, drawing positive ratings and critical praise and generally being a network powerhouse. When King stepped down in 2010, CNN had to bring in a known personality to replace the iconic King. They turned to UK tabloid editor turned television personality Piers Morgan, famous for America’s Got Talent, Britain’s Got Talent, and Celebrity Apprentice, among other media appearances. Turns out that was a bad decision.
CNN is putting an end to Piers Morgan Live. CNN president Jeff Zucker has decided that the Morgan program, which has caused a lot of controversy but has drawn middling ratings, isn’t worth the trouble anymore. CNN says it will find a different role for Morgan, who was apparently an investigative journalist at some point, rather than freeing him up to return to network television.
I just hope it won’t put an end to SNL’s impression of him, because it’s pretty funny.
