The living room is the ultimate battlefield. Sony and Microsoft are doing battle for video game supremacy, with Nintendo looking for the underserved market. Apple has Apple TV, which competes against Roku which competes against your local television provider’s own DVR and streaming services. There’s also smart televisions that provide streaming services, depending on what you’re looking for. However, if you want to stream your Amazon Prime movies and television, you’ve only got one real choice in the Roku… until now. Meet the Amazon Fire TV Streaming Media Player, straight from Amazon’s warehouse to your house.
Amazon has done a great job at finding new markets for themselves, starting with the Kindle and Kindle Fire tablets and moving outward. This is a crowded field, but I think Amazon’s ease of use and the way they’ll integrated your streaming music and movie and game purchases into your Amazon Fire television experience will be enough to help it really take off. I mean, there are 200,000 movies and television shows to choose from, the ability to rent videos from Amazon for a couple of dollars at a time, and 100+ games available at launch with thousands more promised in the future. It also promises 1080p high definition output for all eligible content, which is pretty awesome I have to admit.
Amazon helpfully has provided a comparison and contrast list with the other major streaming media players, probably because Amazon has a faster processor, much more memory, and significantly better sound quality with its Dolby surround sound and a voice search option. I think that voice search might be what puts Fire TV over the edge; at the very least, you know Apple is going to put Siri on the next iteration of Apple TV. Until then, we’ve got this great commercial:
