After witnessing the incredible success of such B-list made-for-TV movies as Sharknado and Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus, it’s only natural that other cable channels will look to the SyFy model and try to find weird, viral, social networking hits of their own. Cheaply made and starring a household name or two (who are willing to work for cheap), SyFy has made a mint off of these sorts of flicks, and the master of no-budget disaster is probably The Asylum, the company behind the aforementioned horror movies and dozens of other mockbusters, goofy horror flicks, and other assorted entertainments. Enter Animal Planet, a company that’s apparently trying to break out of its current genre into something more generally entertaining. Animal Planet is getting into the horror game with Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lampreys.
For a channel best known for counter-programming adorable puppies and kittens against the Super Bowl, this is a pretty bold move. I’m not sure what guided the company to go in this direction for at least one special event, but I imagine the success of its RiffTrax Live/Total Riff Off block on April 1 has something to do with it. The flick will air on Sunday, May 25 at 9 PM as part of the channel’s “Monster Week,” a 9-day-long celebration of awful animals. Speaking of awful animals, it’s headlining star is none other than Shannen Doherty (alongside soap opera actor Jason Brooks and Christopher Lloyd).
