After facing the toughest path of any team in the NCAA Tournament, the Kentucky Wildcats needed one more heroic effort to claim the 2014 National Championship and set off full-blown March Madness throughout Big Blue Nation. The only team standing in their way seemed like another team of destiny, the UConn Huskies. The 8th seed versus the 7th seed for all the marbles. UConn was in its first NCAA tournament with coach Kevin Ollie, and John Calipari has been there and done. Youth versus experience between coaches, and experience versus youth with the players. The UConn Huskies beat the Kentucky Wildcats 60-54 to win the 2014 NCAA Championship.
Kentucky went down big early and clawed back. Every time it seemed like UConn would pull away, Cal’s Cats fought and scrapped and blocked and dunked their way back into the game, but they just couldn’t get over the final hurdle. Too young, too many banged-up players, too little time left on the clock. Full credit to the Cats for getting that far after struggling in the regular season, and the same goes to UConn. It’s just a shame the final score wasn’t different.
“They believed in a vision before anybody could see it. They stuck with it through down times, when we were losing. When we were winning, they stayed together and they believed it was possible,” said UConn coach Kevin Ollie. “They believed in a vision before anybody could see it.”
