When honoring one of New York City’s most famous music groups, you have to take it to the place where it all got rolling. Given that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has finally caved to the pressure and decided to allow KISS within its hallowed halls, it’s only natural that the first Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony to take place outside of Cleveland, Ohio, would happen at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Here’s a wrap-up of the concert and speeches, but the real stand-out wasn’t what people said, it’s the songs they performed. And for me, the best performance of the night that I’ve seen so far is the epic collaboration between the survivors of Nirvana and the premiere woman in punk and rock and roll, one Joan Jett. They performed “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and the result was just magical. The video is too good not to share and it kicks off at about the 0:55 second mark.
Also performing with the band were Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, Annie Clark of St. Vincent, Lorde of being herself and awkwardly dancing, and of course Ms. Jett, who absolutely killed it. Also inducted were KISS, Hall and Oates, and the rest of the guys on this list, though KISS refused to perform together. I can only hope that Nirvana and Joan Jett got along famously and are looking forward to touring together. There have been other great collaborations that spawned follow-up albums (Lou Reed and Metallica’s awful album), but all I want is Joan, Pat Smear, Dave Grohl, and Krist Novoselic to get together and do a tour of Nirvana covers.
