It’s the World Cup, and for those of us in the United States, the World Cup timing is perfect. Games start at noon and end during prime time, so we’re perfectly positioned to watch every game we want (that won’t be the case in 2018 and 2022). I’ve watched parts of every game so far, either via online streaming, ESPN Radio, or the actual television, depending on where I am. It’s been a blast, and most of the games have been really fun. However, while I do love soccer, I don’t love it so much that I’m willing to put my life on the line. Wake up at 4 in the morning yes, die no. However, one Chinese fan gave his life in his attempt to catch all the World Cup action. A 25-year-old Chinese man was found dead in his apartment after binging on an all-night World Cup session.
He died during the Spain-Netherlands game, which defending champion Spain won 5-1. This isn’t the first time a Chinese soccer fanatic died trying to stay up all night. A 26-year-old man named Jiang Xiaoshan died in 2012 trying to watch the European cup games while not missing work, and it apparently was too much for him. It’s terrible to think that someone can just die of exhaustion, but sleep is very important, and as someone who doesn’t get enough of it, exhaustion can take a toll on your health, both physically and mentally.
