It’s a new year, and with a new year comes a new national champion crowned by a new national championship format. Gone are the days of coach polls deciding who gets what hardware at the end of the season, and the BCS is an afterthought as well. It’s all about that college football playoff, and last night we had two spectacular games to get us ready for the first-ever college football playoff championship (that matters). The Oregon Ducks made the defending national champion Florida State Seminoles look like fools, with the Ducks crushing the Seminoles 59-20. On the other side of the coin, the team nobody wanted in the playoff picture beat the thought-to-be-best team in the US, with the Ohio State Buckeyes beating the Alabama Crimson Tide 42-35.
This is what sets the stage for the national championship game. The Sugar Bowl champion Buckeyes versus the Rose Bowl champion Oregon Ducks. It’s kind of amazing when you think about it: this is an Ohio State team that’s playing its third-string quarterback in important games, and yet OSU head coach Urban Meyer is still rolling along with his Ohio State reclamation project. Meanwhile, Oregon is a defense-last team that somehow managed to both out defend and out score the national champions, despite looking pretty mediocre for most of the first half of the game.
No matter who ends up winning, it looks like the first college football playoff has been a massive success.
