I thought it was a joke. I started laughing, and I know I wasn’t the only one who was surprised by the fact Kanye West suddenly developed a sense of humor. In 2009, he interrupted Taylor Swift and in 2015, he was about to interrupt Beck before thinking better of it. The same situation, six years apart. Beyonce was up for Album of the Year and didn’t win. Once, Kanye blocked T-Swizzle and now he’s interrupting Beck. Turns out it wasn’t a joke. Kanye West almost interrupted Beck’s awards speech for real.
“I don’t know what he said, all I know is if the Grammys want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We ain’t gonna play with them no more….Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyonce, and at this point, we tired of it,” said West, who is neither older or wiser since settling down and having a child with a sex tape star. “Because what happens is, when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration and we as musicians have to inspire people who go to work every day and they listen to that Beyonce album and they feel like it takes them to another place.”
Let’s ignore the fact that Beyonce won plenty of other Grammys. Beck’s Morning Phase is a really good album, and most importantly, it’s a work of true artistry done by one person. Beck Hansen wrote that entire album, and composed the music (not the strings). Yes, he had a band and producers, but it takes a dozen people to write one Beyonce song, and Beyonce is the least of them. If that’s not a real artist, then no one’s a real artist, least of all Kanye West. Beck is an artist, Beyonce is a corporation. There’s kind of a difference there.
