There’s something very satisfying about a nice helping of tea. Iced tea on a hot day, hot tea on a cold day, tea is pretty much satisfying in any context. Certainly a man from Little Rock, Arkansas, would agree, or he would have before a very weird, very horrible accident. An Arkansas man who drank a gallon of tea a day developed kidney failure in what may be the first case of kidney failure ever caused by tea.
“The case presented here was almost certainly due to excessive consumption of iced tea,” wrote doctors and study authors Fyed Syed and Alejandra Mena-Gutierrez. “This is the first time we’ve ever heard of iced tea causing kidney damage and failure. It’s certainly an interesting find for us.”
It’s not so interesting for the man who is suffering from kidney failure, though. Doctors were unable to restore his kidney function and now he is getting dialysis three times a week on an outpatient basis. That’s what happens when you drink 16 cups a day of tea or more. Still, the doctors stress, a nice cup of tea before bed won’t wreck your life.
“If you’re having two to three cups a day, you’re probably OK as long as your family doesn’t have a history of kidney disease,” said Dr. Syed. “Just don’t drink in excess or replace water with tea, like this man did.”
