The Room is one of my favorite movies. It’s the rare film where someone spent a lot of money and did the wrong thing at every possible turn. A passion project for mysterious, secretive director Tommy Wiseau, who claims to have been raised in Louisiana and only will call himself an American despite an impenetrable Eastern European accent, The Room morphed from a serious Tennessee Williams-style drama (if Tennessee Williams had no concept of how to write a script, dialogue, characters, or in English) into a black comedy thanks to celebrity super fans, who spread the gospel of The Room far and wide, turning a weird little indie movie into one of my most favorite live cinema experiences ever. Now that movie is getting a movie made about it.
James Franco is writing and direction a film called The Disaster Artist, based off of the book written by Greg Sestero. Greg was Tommy Wiseau’s best friend and one of the few people to get within the secretive auteur’s world, and he eventually wrote a tell-all book about the making of The Room and his general relationship with Tommy. Here’s a first look at James Franco as Tommy “Johnny” Wiseau and Dave Franco as Greg “Mark” Sestero. If there’s anything that can be said about James Franco, it’s that he consistently does interesting things when given a chance, so this is probably going to be either a great movie or a weird disaster.
Joining the Brothers Franco will be James’s partner in The Interview, Seth Rogen, as well as Kate Upton, Josh Hutcherson, and Zac Efron, among others yet to be announced. It’s not sure who is going to be playing who yet, except Josh Hutcherson is going to be playing Denny AKA Philip Haldiman.
