With a record of 24-8, at various points the University of South Carolina had a strong chance to make the NCAA Tournament, which crowns the champion of college basketball. The Gamecocks did receive an invitation, but it wasn’t meant for them. The NCAA accidentally invited the wrong USC to the NCAA Tournament. The invitation was meant for the University of Southern California Trojans, not the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. Talk about egg on the face!
The worst part of this whole story is that the South Carolina Gamecocks were a pretty strong contender to make the NCAA Tournament, and had they gotten in, they probably would have done pretty well; during March Madness, anything can happen. Instead, the slot went to the Vanderbilt Commodores, who lost in the first round and would have been the better pick. The Gamecocks went to the NIT, where they lost in the second round. After such a disappointing rug-pull from the NCAA, that’s not surprising. Basketball teams run on their confidence, and that’s a demoralizing event.
The NCAA has apologized to South Carolina for the incident.
