America is a country of excess. We like big cars, big roads, and big food to go in our big bellies. After all, this is a country of fried cheese sandwiches washed out with 10 shots of espresso, so it’s not surprising that America’s fast casual chains are all tempted to pile on the calories and pile on the excess. Every year, the Center for Science in the Public Interest releases a list of the worst foods for sale at your local restaurant. Here are the meals to avoid at chain restaurants via the Xtreme Eating 2016 list.
Unsurprisingly, Applebee’s has managed to take the top spot with, of all things, an appetizer. It’s the Applebee’s Build Your Sampler, which allows the hungry customer to select an assortment of goodies like beer cheese and pretzels, spinach artichoke dip, and cheeseburger egg rolls. If you pick the wrong foods, your appetizer plate can be a staggering 3,390 calories!
Of course, they’re not the only offenders. Jersey Mike’s subs, Sonic’s Route 44 slush with sippable candy, and everyone’s favorite food trough The Cheesecake Factory are all represented. Romano’s Macaroni Grill and Maggiano’s Little Italy are a one-two punch of carbs and salt, with Pizzaria Uno as an encore. A lot of entries from previous years are still out there, too, so… be mindful or be painfully obese.
