Death is very good for business in the music industry. Michael Jackson found this out the hard way. After the singer died in 2009, Jackson’s estate signed a massive new record deal with Sony. The fruits of that new record deal, an album called Michael, will be released by the Jackson estate and Sony Music on December 14. Michael features 10 new tracks recorded by the singer before his death, with vocals being recorded all the way back in 2007.
The vocals emerged during the months following Jackson’s record-breaking concert film, This Is It, according to Jackson’s co-manager John Branca. The vocals were verified as Jackson by music experts, and producers like Akon and Teddy Riley added the music to the tracks, mixing the tracks and putting the finishing touches on the raw songs where appropriate. Much like Tupac Shakur, I imagine Jackson will release more songs dead than he ever did alive. The King of Pop lives on, and I’m not talking about impersonators.
“It would have been a sin to leave it in the vaults,” said Branca of Jackson’s lost songs, who added that at least another album’s worth of new material is waiting in the wings.
